Call for Papers: Playful Experiences

What does it involve to enter the state of play? How games and other playful phenomena stand out among other everyday experiences, and can playful experiences be designed? Is there a way we can learn to  understand games better by looking at phenomena that are not games, but  where playful behaviours are common? How are play and function  intertwined in Facebook, iPhone, Habbo Hotel and the other topical  interactive products and services?

As, on the one hand, so-called gamer generations are spreading  understanding of play and games literacy into society, and, on the  other, digital information and communication technologies are having an  impact on various use contexts and in different social processes, there will be increasing needs for understanding playfulness that is not restricted to games in the classic sense. Play as an attitude and mode of engagement is appearing in social Internet services, and also working life is becoming increasingly open towards playful and creative modes of thought and activity.

‘Playful Experiences’ seminar invites presentations from multiple points of view, promoting wider interdisciplinary dialogue around player studies and games research, and in related fields. The co-organisers, University of Tampere Games Research Lab and Nokia Research Center invite both theoretical as well as empirically based studies into ‘playfulness’.

Particular fields of study include, but are not limited to:

• theories and methods for understanding play experiences;
• the social and cultural construction of play experiences;
• the nature of playful phenomena and playful attitude;
• the social character of games and playful experiences;
• the role of technology for playful experiences, e.g. play in mobile user contexts;
• user interface and usability issues related to playful interaction;
• play experiences beyond games.

The seminar will be held in Tampere, Finland and will be free of charge;  the number of participants will be restricted.

Lisa e-journal (Maison de la recherche et des sciences de l’homme - Université de Caen – Normandy – France ) is seeking contributors to its Spring 2010 issue on media in the U.K. and the U.S.

Media In Motion: Changes in Contemporary Media in English-Speaking Countries

The current shifts in the media industry in the U.K. and the U.S. may be ascribed to a variety of causes – widespread Internet access, the concentration of media ownership as well as the sea-change journalistic practices are now going through. The media industry is in constant motion, and raising increasingly challenging research questions in the process. The theme of movement can be analysed from multiple theoretical and methodological perspectives, which include, but are not limited to, the areas of research suggested below:

• Internet and traditional media: print media, radio and television have all turned the Internet into an integral part of their development policies. What are the consequences of the increased complexity of the media environment?
• Bloggers and journalists: what is the relationship between political blogs and traditional journalism? Have new forms of writing emerged?
• The construction of public opinion: the globalization of information flows has gained increased prominence. What are its causes and its consequences? Is there such a thing as globalized public opinion? Do globalized information flows strengthen hyper-local coverage or more generally media localism? What is the part played by social networks such as YouTube and Daily Motion in disseminating political information?

Proposals (200 - 300 words in English or in French) are invited covering either a single English-speaking country, or using a comparative approach.

Completed articles will be due by September 15th, 2009. Authors are kindly requested to comply with the submission guidelines on the journal’s site.

Post-doc position available at the Laboratoire de cyberpychologie de l’UQO for an upcoming project on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and virtual reality (VR). The project will involve mostly the prevention and treatment of PTSD among military personnel using VR, but other research interests will also be studied, such as presence and applications of VR to other anxiety disorders.

The Laboratoire de cyberpychologie de l’Université du Québec en Outaouais is a unique research and CBT-training centre. Located in the city Gatineau (in the province of Québec, just across the rive from Cadana’s capital Ottawa), it is largely funded by the Canada Research Chairs, SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR, CFI and many other provincial and private organizations. Researchers have at their disposal the infrastructure to conduct clinical and experimental research using cutting edge technology, such as a fully immersive room, high end VR head-mounted display and wireless psychophysiological devices. Virtual environments are developed in the lab by a team of 3D artists and computer engineers. Trained CBT therapists can deliver therapy and use virtual reality whenever if is appropriate for their patients. The research team is dynamic and multidisciplinary. The ideal candidate would have experience in PTSD and / or VR and would have excellent writing skills in English, but other backgrounds and skills will be considered.

The third in a series of biennial international conferences on Internet Technologies and Applications (ITA 09), will be held in Wrexham, North East Wales, UK from Tuesday 8th to Friday 11th September 2009.

The conference will draw together researchers and developers from academia and industry across all fields of Internet computing and engineering.
Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. In addition to a full
technical programme, including keynote presentations, papers, posters, tutorials and
special sessions, the social itinerary will include a visit to the historic English city of Chester and a mediaeval Welsh banquet at Ruthin Castle.

ITA 05 and ITA 07 were extremely successful events. ITA 09 aims to be bigger and better in every way. Come and join us in Wrexham in September 2009!

In the last decade, new classes of devices for accessing information have emerged along with increased connectivity. In parallel to the proliferation of these devices, new interaction styles have been explored. Among these new styles are virtual reality, mixed reality, 3D interaction, tangible user interfaces, context-aware interfaces and recognition- based interfaces. As a result of this increasing diversity of devices and interaction styles, developers of next-generation interfaces experience difficulties such as the lack of appropriate interaction abstractions, the need to create different design variations of a single user interface and the integration of novel hardware. As part of the user interface software research community effort to address these difficulties, the concept of a User Interface Description Language (UIDL), which has its foundations in user interface management systems and model-based authoring, has reemerged as a promising approach. UIDLs allow user interface designers to specify a user interface, using high- level constructs, which abstract away implementation details. UIDL specifications can then be automatically or semi automatically converted into concrete user interfaces or user interface implementations. Several UIDLs, mostly using XML as the general language, have been developed in recent years in order to simplify the development of next generation interfaces. However, many questions regarding the usefulness and effectiveness of UIDLs for next generation user interfaces remain open.

The aim of this Special Issue is to present high quality, original, manuscripts related to User Interface Description Languages for Next Generation User Interfaces. Manuscripts must be original, but significant expansions and revisions of papers recently presented at conferences and workshops will be considered. Possible topics include:

• Requirements for supporting the design and implementation of next generation user interfaces.
• Characteristics and comparison of interaction styles.
• Models for specifying the structure and behavior of next generation interfaces.
• Architectural frameworks for emerging interaction styles.
• Lessons learned from developing, evaluating and using particular UIDLs.
