Per chi ha letto Getting Things Done, di David Allen, il concetto di Weekly Review è ben chiaro… Per gli altri:

Questa settimana la mia inclinazione a procrastinare ha avuto la meglio, e molti appunti, notizie e link che mi ero ripromesso di postare qui sul blog sono rimasti nella cartella di OneNote©…Approffitto di questa mattinata pre-pasquale per svuotare la coda.

  E mi trova più che d’accordo (facile, dirlo dopo… lo so lo so). Credo che sia necessario un cambio di paradigma, sia nelle modalità di interazione che nel gamplay, per rilanciare il mondo videoludico (e quello della ricerca con/su/per la realtà virtuale). L’esperienza di gioco con il piccolo trabiccolo targato Nintendo, il Wii, è un esempio di come l’interazione, il coinvolgimento, l’immersione siano più una questione di interazione che di realismo grafico… Il recupero del concetto di affordances, con cui ci stiamo da tempo confrontando in laboratorio, prende le mosse proprio da queste considerazioni.

EDIT: Mi scuso, ma sto provando Word2007 per il post sul blog…

Mi sta venendo una brutta mania: unire il sacro (si fa per dire) ed il profano (anche qui: dipende dai gusti).

Iniziamo con il “sacro”: con Alice stiamo correndo, in queste ultime settimane, per convertire ed analizzare i dati raccolti durante il primo studio della mia ricerca sulla presenza sociale. La fretta è dovuta alla decisione, forse presa alla leggera, di presentare il lavoro a CHItaly 2007… la cui scadenza era prevista per il 7 aprile, ma proprio pochi minuti fa hanno aggiornato la deadline, spostandola nientepocodimenoche al 15 maggio… Quindi, un poco di respiro, soprattutto dopo le scorse settimane, costellate da scadenze, call e convegni.

Passiamo a qualcosa di più serio: il “profano”.

Qualche settimana fa, per variare la dieta videoludica a base di WoW, abbiamo acquistato il Nintendo Wii. La prima impressione è stata completamente positiva, con un’evidente regressione all’infanzia che ha colpito tutti, in casa. Dopo qualche giorno di prove, ho iniziato a ragionare sulle opportunità che il giocattolino in questione offre per la ricerca sull’interazione mediata.
Se da una parte infatti la scelta del Wiimote come elemento di interfaccia permette uno stile di gioco innovativo, d’altra parte questo stile si tramuta in un senso di immersione molto marcato. Ed ecco che il paradigma della realtà virtuale come soluzione tecnica che garantisca l’immersione percettiva viene superato dal concetto di flow, di coinvolgimento, creato dalla corrispondenza tra l’attività fisica (oddio: io a tennis ci gioco seduto, ma Ecate corre e salta, dopo aver liberato il salotto da tavoli sedie e poltrone) e i movimenti del nostro avatar nell’ambiente ricreato. Qualcuno parla di VR 2.0, al riguardo…

I was reading this blog archive, and noticed that almost every post is about a call for paper, a conference, or rarely a journal article I tripped over…

And that’s not what I wanted this place to be. I thought about it, and I identified 3 major issues: 1) I’ve been to busy during past months 2) I’m not sure what I should write about 3) I don’t like to write down my thoughts in English…

About point 1: my phD research is going on, and I’m now conducting an experiment about social presence in VE… Data production has been time-consuming: transciption process, transcript coding and data input require a lot of attention (I have to say “Thank you!” to Filippo and Alice as they are helping me).

I’m always uncertain about what I can post here… Articles ? Personal news ? Web review ? There’s so much, around the web and the world… And a lot seems to be related to social psychology, virtual reality and new media communication… But I resolved to write all out…

Issue 3 is the worst one… I don’t speak english well, I know. But I’d love to learn it.. and I need to do that: research world speaks and writes in english, international conferences are in english… So, it’s time to refresh my accent, to exercise on writing non-technical stuff… I’ll try.

Where does all that bring me ?

Point 1 is solution-less: I have so many project still open, that no gtd-stuff nor Red-bull can help… I’m trying to close all non-research related duty (except teaching, I hope), but it’s an hard job: I still have to deliver 3 big applications.

Point 2: I’ll write about personal ideas, impressions and research notes. I’m setting up a parallel site, with some others UC phD students, and it will be devoted to research and vr news.

Point 3: I bought “Practical English Usage” and some DVDs. Please, keep being patient with my mistakes and baby-line spelling

I’m in Ottawa Airport, waiting for my flight to Newark->Milano.

I’m experiencing some wireless network drops… Worst case, I’ll post this (and others) when in Newark or at home.

I’m leaving Canada, after two months of rainy days, good people, research and walk.

I had the opportunity to learn how a good researcher (chiarman, speaker, teacher…. ) works, interacts and shares ideas. I saw how being open to other’s ideas could help you find something new. I’ve met people that love our job, being able to criticize without underrating other’s idea, opinions and interests.

On a more pragmatical front, I’ve started my study on Social Presence in VE, formalized it for the ethic comitee (and that’s something I haven’t done before). We developed (right: Manon developed) a survey on TAM (Technology Acceptance Model): if you are a psychologist, please take 5 minutes to compile it.  I’m on the right lane to conclude my presence literature review, and some new articles Stéphane gave me helped to fill some holes on theories’ review.

I’ll miss Ottawa, Gatineau and all this place.

But I’m on my way back to my beloved, my family, my friends and my pizzas, too!

Today I went to Ottawa,  driven by the intention to shopping.

As usual, I was 300d-armed, and I spend some time at the War Memorial on Elgin Street, speaking with mourning people came to honour and remember thier veterans.

I uploaded some pictures on my Picasa album, but I want to publish here this one, that really made me  feeling grateful to this Country:

Today I realized that the previous header image wasn’t more representing the reality of the scenery: Ottawa and Gatineau are getting cooler as winter is coming near.  So I changed it.

I made also some minor changes, lowering the header, so there’s more space for my rants, and a new sitemap has been forwarded to google.com.
